Windows 95/98 Dial Up Instructions
Step 1: Installing Dial-up Networking
- Click the Windows Start button, select "Programs", then "accessories". If there is a program called "Dial-up Networking", skip to “Installing TCP/IP”.
- If you did not have Dial-up Networking in the accessories menu, go to the Windows Start button, click settings, choose Control panel.
- Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Click on the Windows Setup tab.
- Double-click on Communications.
- Be sure that Dial-up Networking is checked.
- Click on the ok button, click okay again.
- If prompted, insert your Windows 95 or 98 disk.
- If prompted, for Computer Name, Workgroup, or Description, use your username, Egyptian, and your real name respectively.
- If prompted, restart your computer.
Step 2: Installing the TCP/IP Protocol
- Click on the Windows Start button, click settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click on the Network icon. You should have a list of installed network protocols here.
- If you have TCP/IP skip to “Configuring TCP/IP”
- Click on the Add button.
- Double-click on Protocol.
- In left column choose Microsoft.
- In the right column double-click TCP/IP
- You should now see a list of installed components
Step 3: Making the Connection
- Click the Windows Start button, choose Programs, then accessories, then click on Dial-up Networking.
- If this is the first time in this area you will get a wizard to setup a Dial-up Networking Icon. If a wizard does not appear, double-click on the Make New Connection icon.
- The first screen tells you what it is going to do, click next.
- This screen is asking for a name, type Egyptian in the place of My Connection, then click next.
- Enter your local number SEE WELCOME LETTER (not your home phone number)
- Click finish.
- Double-click on the Egyptian icon.
- In the username field put the user name that you chose with us. Make sure it is in lower case letters, and has no spaces or dots or commas. Make sure you DO NOT include the @egyptian.net extension behind the username.
- In the password field, put in the password that you chose with us. Both the username and passwords are case sensitive, make sure you enter them correctly.
- Be sure the Phone number is correct and then click cancel.
- Then right click on the Egyptian icon.
- Then left click on “create shortcut”. (You will get a message saying Windows cannot create a shortcut here, would you like to have it placed on the desktop instead? Click yes)
Now you are ready to get on the Internet. Just double-click the “Shortcut to Egyptian” icon and make sure your user name and password are correct, then click connect. Once connected you will get an online status saying you are connected, or an icon in the right hand corner of your screen of two computers linked together talking. Then double-click the Internet Explorer icon or Netscape icon to browse the Internet.
